Seniors For Seniors was first established in Toronto in 1985 by Peter D. Cook on the advice of his then 80 year old mother. She said that a lot of her friends were bored and wanted something to do. There are many seniors in their 70's, 80's and 90's who are not sick but need help with daily tasks in order to continue living in their homes without relying on friends and family. It's hard to ask for help. They want to maintain their independence.
Seniors For Seniors contracts workers 50 and older to provide homecare support services, a concept that sets us apart from other agencies. Seniors have the chance to care for other senior citizens and, in many cases, form lasting friendships. Our bonded and insured workers have the life experience and empathy to relate to clients as peers.
Services are exclusively for seniors who need help with meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, shopping, minor household repairs and gardening, as well as live- in and overnight care. When driving is no longer an option, our ladies and gentlemen provide transportation for shopping, banking or just a nice drive through the country.
As our mission statement reads, we provide whatever assistance a senior needs to remain at home and independent.
Our companions or "friendly visitors" will go for walks, write letters, play games or make a cup of tea. Some of our clients have a feeling of loneliness and simply enjoy chatting with our visitors. This can be done in the senior's home, in nursing or retirement homes and even in the hospital.
Homemakers are available to provide a rather unlimited range of services in order to accommodate the individual's needs. These include light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, shopping, errands and assistance with personal care.
The live-in companion provides the same services as a homemaker on a 24-hour basis for seniors who require constant supervision or assistance with routine tasks. Our companions wish to maintain their own homes and privacy. Therefore, long term live-in assignments are split between two companions and, if at all possible, the same two will remain for the duration of the case.
Overnight companions are often requested by seniors to provide the reassurance of having someone in their home. Overnight homemaking is offered when personal support is required throughout the night. These services are also available in hospitals and nursing or retirement homes.
Our housecleaners are conscientious, thorough and caring. They will dust, vacuum, wash floors, clean bathrooms and kitchens and the stove and refrigerator when requested.
Our handypersons are retired individuals who simply enjoy fixing "things" and doing odd jobs in order to help other seniors. They are not considered professionals but, through years of maintaining their own households, have the experience to paint, replace taps, do small carpentry work, install a ceiling fan or help with outdoor jobs like gardening or hedge trimming.
Our driving service has no similarity to that of a taxi other than the need for a vehicle! Our companion-drivers, who use their own vehicles, will accompany seniors to medical appointments, the grocery store, the bank or wherever they have the desire to go.
